Clinical Therapies & Treatment Approaches at Holland Pathways
At Holland Pathways, treatment is built around the individual. Each plan is shaped by a person’s history, trauma, mental health needs, and long-term goals. Master’s-level clinicians draw from a wide range of evidence-based therapies, innovative clinical tools, and whole-person healing approaches to help identify the most effective path toward lasting recovery. That same individualized support carries across every level of care, from detox and residential treatment to outpatient programming and lifelong alumni support.

Dual Diagnosis: Treating the Whole Picture
Depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and trauma are not just side effects of substance use, they are often the root cause. When mental health goes untreated, the cycle of addiction continues regardless of how committed someone is to getting better.
Holland Pathways uses a dual-diagnosis approach, assessing and treating co-occurring mental health conditions alongside addiction within the same program.
Co-occurring conditions we treat: PTSD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, ADHD, borderline personality disorder, and trauma-related disorders.
Evidence-Based Clinical Therapies
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT):
DBT teaches practical skills in four areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. For people in recovery, these are the daily tools that make sobriety sustainable.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):
CBT identifies the automatic thoughts and behavioral patterns that drive substance use, then replaces them with healthier responses. It forms the backbone of our clinical curriculum.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS):
TMS is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared therapy that uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation and reward, both significantly affected by long-term substance use. It is particularly valuable for clients with treatment-resistant depression or those who have not found full relief through medication alone. No sedation, no surgery, no downtime.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT):
MAT combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapy to reduce cravings, ease withdrawal, and lower relapse risk. At Holland Pathways, MAT is always part of a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan, never a standalone approach.
Brainspotting:
Brainspotting uses specific eye positions to access and process trauma stored at a neurological level reaching pain that traditional talk therapy sometimes cannot. It is especially effective for clients with complex trauma, PTSD, and addiction rooted in adverse life experiences.
Trauma-Informed Care:
Every clinician on our team is trained in trauma-informed practice. It is not a single therapy, it is a lens applied to everything we do, from the way our staff communicates to the structure of the clinical day.
Individual & Group Therapy:
One-on-one sessions with your personal therapist give you space to go deep. Group sessions create peer connection and shared accountability. Both happen daily throughout your stay.
Whole-Person Healing
Clinical therapy is the foundation, but healing does not only happen in a session. Our experiential and holistic programming addresses mind, body, and spirit, helping clients build a life in recovery that feels worth living.
Art & Music Therapy:
Led by our dedicated Music and Art Director, both modalities use creative expression to process emotion, build self-awareness, and develop connection.
Yoga & Exercise:
Daily movement to regulate the nervous system, rebuild physical health, and develop discipline and body awareness.
Animal Therapy:
Our therapy dog Finnley is a regular part of campus life, offering documented benefits for stress, emotional regulation, and isolation.
Mindfulness & Meditation:
Woven throughout the clinical day to develop the presence and self-awareness that long-term recovery requires.
Spiritual Care:
Our on-staff Spiritual Director works with clients exploring meaning, purpose, and connection as part of their healing. No single tradition is assumed — this meets each person where they are.
Cooking and Life Skills:
Practical programming that prepares clients for healthy, independent living after treatment.
Relapse Prevention
Relapse prevention is a dedicated component of our clinical program, not a footnote at the end of treatment. Clients identify personal triggers, develop individualized coping strategies, build a crisis plan, and practice the tools that will protect their recovery once they leave.
